Help with new doodlebug engine

I'm looking to upgrade the HP in my doodlebug to a 7HP tecumseh motor I found on craigslist 7 hp tecumseh motor I know next to nothing about small engines so I need to know what things to look for in an engine if I'm looking to swap for it. I know I need to know how big the engine is to see if it fits into the frame but I don't know the other specifics I would need such as shaft size and whatnot. If it helps the guy said it was a 3/4" shaft

I may be wrong but I doubt that monster will fit due to the dimensions bottom to top, A briggs 5hp flathead is tight! I would measure both the engine and the frame before commiting to a purchase! Here is one of mine with a 5hp briggs........

Ya I'm planning on getting some measurements. I found a guy close to me(east haven) who has a B&S 6 HP motor off a power washer for sale. Think that would work if it fits?

Be sure to check the length of the crank also on any engine, some power washers have a vary short crank.

I once bought a 5hp Honda power washer for the engine, turned out the crank was 7/8 and only 1 inch long.

You can get a new 6.5hp honda clone for less than that Tecumseh, but you probably already know that.

Actually I didn't. Can anyone point me to a honda clone that they know already fits into a doodlebug perfectly?

unless you have a older DB, you will need to make or buy a adaptor plate or cut new motor mount holes.

Harbor freight has the engines on sale for 99.00 sometimes.

Briggs and Tecumseh do not bolt in with out any work either.

Well then I guess I have a summer project on my hands, eh?
EDIT: Would this engine work as far as shaft size and whatnot? http://www.harborfreight.com/engines...ine-66014.html and if you could point me to a site for the adaptor plate that'd be great

yes it would work. You can get an adapter from a member here named CJTMINI. His kit works very well.

Search results for: '6.5hp gas engine'
The older DBs will accept a flathead in the extra slots but a clone will require a plate or just reslotting, I reccomend a plate although I did not use one! I am cheap, as well as a stubborn do it yourselfer who learns much by trial and error! Get a kit!

Just wanna say thanks so far guys. You've all been very helpful even though I'm a new member. I'm still hoping that it's just the threading on the nut thats shot and not on the bolt so I don't need to buy a new motor
