I like Tecumseh engines for old school mini's. It will depend on your gearing but if you want plenty of take off power you could go with a 8hp Tec but I have some 3.5's that can haul anyone! (favorite small engine by far)

Cheapest route would be a good brand honda clone 6.5 HP since it's a doodle bug and not an old mini.

dbone,if you like the old flathead setup with torque converter this would be a bolt on. you can keep the original rear sprocket on with this setup
pete's bike with a 4hp tecumseh

astro wheels are cool looking is this type of wheel you are talking about?

I think dbone's talking about the fox trailbug that I just sold him. And that is an oldschool mini. I think they had a 4hp Tec on them when they were new.

ok jeep4me, a fox trail bug. do have any pictures of it. does it look like a fox doodle bug? i have a late 60's fox doodle bug and they came factory with a jackshaft mounts weld to the frame. giving you any gear ratio you wants
also have different sets of motor mounts. the only pictures i have of my doodle bug are the ones i save from ebay when i purchase it.
YOU THINK HE PRIME IT ON HIS TAILGATE

The biggest difference is the straight up bars.

If it's a Trailbug, I'd go with a 4-5 Tecumseh for the vintage look, the Tav 2 would give you plenty help off the line and for top end.
