Clutch Problems

Recently I went and bought a 6.5hp clone engine from Costco for my DB30.
I went and bought a 3/4 comet clutch from Princess auto, the problem is it wont fit on my shaft..
The shaft has a key coming out from it..and the clutch has a key as well...so no way to get on.
Are there other clutches out there that don't come with key's?
or will i have to cut the key off the shaft?

Thanks.

are you sure the key doesn't come off the engine? Max torque used to make a clutch where you add a key so give them a call.

I would double check the key on the engine tough, that should come off. What brand engine? Champion?

Hey Monkey Poop...............

Grab the key on the shaft with a pair of vice grips and pull it out.

Both my Max-Torques came with the key separate. Most keys are removeable.A few taps with a hammer and punch will pop them out.(the only one I've seen with the key pemanently fixed to the clutch is the stock DB30 clutch.)

I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but I had to polish the bore of my new clutch with a moto-tool and a sanding drum to get it onto the shaft.Seems the shaft and the bore were EXACTLY 5/8",and it wouldn't fit.But after a few passes with the sander,it slid right on.

Hilliard brand clutches have a non-replaceable bronze key cast right into the bushing/shoe hub assembly...something to think about if you're pushing enough torque to twist off a key...

Interesting screen name...must be a story there somewhere...

Really.Makes me wonder if the stock DB30 clutch is a Hillard. If so,I know to avoid them now.

Thanks for the info, and yes it is a Champion.

I have a champion too, the key will be in the shaft pretty tight, but it will come out with some work.

I've bought quite a few new clutches and neither came with the key separate, they look swagged or brazed in. Never had to polish the bore of a clutch to get one on either.
