fastening throttle cable at twist grip

Okay, got my linkage set up on the engine, got my cable, got my new twist grip throttle, but now I have a new issue... the the cable does not stay put on the twist throttle end. Anybody know how to keep the cable housing in place on the throttle assembly, as this is my current problem and why the throttle isn't working consistently. Is there something that clamps the cable and housing in place in the twist throttle? I sense that I'm likely missing an important piece.

I should clarify the throttle cable is attached inside the twist throttle grip, it's just the part outside where hte black housing meets the handle that I'm curious about. Right now, it just flops loosely and prevents the throttle from actuating completely. I need to somehow take the slack out.

You're missing the little adjuster. I'm too lazy to go get a pic of one of mine, but here's a throttle set on ebay. They are split and threaded with a little cup to hold the cable housing and a nut to lock them in place.eBay Motors: New Minibike/Mini Bike Twist Throttle Control 7/8" Bars (item 200247917451 end time Aug-26-08 11:19:50 PDT)

That looks like what I have, only I can't figure out how to retain the cable housing inside that the chrome piece. I must be missing something, though my set up, brand new in package, didn't come with anything additional nor instructions. I may have bought mine from that guy, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

The cheapie twist throttles like the one in the pic don't usually secure the grip end of the throttle cable housing...it just enters the grip housing through a plastic guide bushing, but the bushing doesn't hold the cable housing there by itself...the cable housing stays in place up on the grip because the other end of the cable housing is clamped to the engine, and the cable running through the housing is secured to both the engine (carb) and the throttle grip mechanism, preventing (by tension) any movement of the cable housing at the throttle grip area.

I wish I could help. I cheated and used a complete twist throttle and cable from a donor motorcycle. Much to my surprise, the cable length was ideal.

This twist throttle is a royal POS... I forgot to mention when I tried to install it, I had to use my old cable because the guy I bought it from sent me a cable with a larger-size cable end (on the twist grip end) than would fit in the twist grip mechanism. The rubber grip also tends to slip on the twist mechanism...not sure if I'll have to glue it in place in order to make it work. It seems if I twist hard enough I can get the throttle to work, but it just doesn't seem like it needs to take that much effort.

The more I think about it and look at it, I'm thinking my throttle cable may be too long... I think if I can take the slack out of it, then perhaps I can get it functioning correctly. What's the best way to cut through the cable, a cutting wheel?

There is a hand tool specifically for cutting cable, similar to sidecutters, but the cutting edges are 360 degrees to prevent the cut end from untwisting...

Lacking that, I use sidecutters, and retwist the cut end...
