Possible engine options, plz help me decide

Ive recently been rekindled to my old toys. Dug out the old minibike, ive got a monkey wards/gillson machine. Its all there and original. I was having issues getting the engine to idle without the clutch grabbing but I figured out the clutch is bad.

? #1 I have the original Tecumseh H50 and would like to keep it as the original powertrain. I also have a brand new 8hp briggs, should I install the briggs or sell it for a clone?

I really like the flat head look, so I am a bit torn. The briggs would need an air filter/exhaust and some sort of governor linkage as its missing. I havent started it yet but I am fairly certain its brand new, minus a couple pieces.

Any carb issues on the briggs, I heard some carbs aren't really set up to operate at different rpm vs a fixed rpm.

I need a clutch either way right now, but the H50 has a smaller crank than the briggs, I think? Any thoughts?

The tecumseh runs just fine, should I just run that?

Not my machine but/ could be..

What would you do??

This might be out in left field, but, would it be possible to fit the shroud and air filter housing from the old engine on the new engine?

If the H50 runs good, that's what I'd use. They are tough, stout engines. The 8hp Briggs may be too tall. The Briggs probably has a 1" crank. You can buy clutches for these, but it may be cheaper to run from a sprocket on the crank to one on the jackshaft and put a clutch on the right side of the jackshaft,to run to the rear sprocket. I wouldn't sell either to buy a clone. The carbs designed to run at a stedy RPM will not have an idle circuit or an idle adjustment screw. A lot of sellers will try to confuse people on this to sell their goods. If you have an idle screw, you're good to go.

The tecumseh does seem to run well, I am a bit worried about the idle circuit in the carb. The idle mixture screw doesnt seem to be changing much of anything. I had the carb off and cleaned it up, but I must have missed a little port. I have a fluke meter with a sparkplug pick up that ill bring home from work today, that way I can really check idle rpm.

I am pretty sure the 8hp will fit as I ve seen the same bike with a 10hp, the frame looked unmolested.

I'd like to hotrod this a little without getting to wrapped up in a money game. I didnt want to hurt the original motor by removing the governor if I was dissapointed with the power/speed after a new clutch.

I thik he found out later that was a 8 with a 10hp shroud. The 8hp won't give you more speed, but it will get you the same speed a LOT quicker

Agreed, provided gearing and tire height goes unchanged.

I suppose the easiest thing to do right now is just buy a clutch for the tecumseh, if I am unhappy with it ill start forming a plan to change it than.....
