Help - Baja DB30-G (Racer/Green) Dick's Sporting Goods

I bought my kids a Baja "Racer" (DB30-G) from Dick's Sporting Goods last Christmas for $119... At the time, I wished I had bought all they had at that price but now am glad I didn't.

We have gotten about 45 minutes use out of the bike due to a problem that seems to be known to the Baja folks - there was an "addendum page" in the owner's manual about the problem I am having

anyway, here's the problem - i'm no mechanic but not afraid to dig in either

DAY 1: drained the shipping oil, put correct oil in, gased it up and it started right up 1st pull... kids rode it a few times christmas day and all seemed well but around the 30 minute mark, the bike started bogging down BADLY with any throttle... speed was poor and no power to climb even the smallest incline (as in ANYTHING not level)... when running with choke around 1/2 to 3/4, seems to be OK but eventually gave it up for the day and tried next day again ... DAY 2: this time, had problems getting it started but bigger problems keeping it running - ANY throttle would choke the engine ... after an hour or so of messing around with the choke, fresh gas, cleaning air filter, checking gap on plug, new plug, etc...i broke out the manual and saw the "addendum" that said "if you have problems with the bike choking out, adjust the air on the carb. etc..." i did the adjustment and numerous other combinations but no change... gave up again ... DAY 3: bike now starts but won't stay running even at idle for more than a few seconds (dirty carb.?) .. DAY 4 through NOW (almost a year later): bike won't start at all

any thoughts from the gearheads out there?

thanks
joel

Sounds like the carb may need to be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned & blown out. Make sure all the small passages are cleaned out.

Don't know if there is a problem with some form of an assembly lube or a protectant for shipping, eventually clogging up some of the passages in the carb after the initial run in.

After sitting for a year, any fuel that was sitting in the carb has probably become more like a varnish.

Same bike, same store same problem..

Same bike, same store same problem. Talked to a owner of a local power sports store that sells Asian(Chines & Korean) imports and he dissembles and cleans every carb right out of the crate and that solves 95% of call backs. Dissembled ours and found not metal shavings but fine black plastic chips, and a little shellacky-gummy stuff in bowl. cleaned all with carb clean and air, idles high though now but runs fine. I suspect maybe factory gas from test run up at factory not drained out thourougly also igh be a little of problem?. I going to post later some other little things we did to it as its nice and peppy for an 8 year old. Having a blast now for the money spent!
Good luck!
