Some of them are like car valves. You compress the spring and there's a cup and a retainer/retainers.

The cup in the top of the spring is normally the retainer. Did you compress the spring without compressing the shock?

jimh,i wonder if the shocks come apart little different. my columbia minibike shocks look like any 70's vintage shocks and on them you have to unthread the lower eyebolt from the black tube and then go in with a socket extension and unbolt the nut and then it all comes apart.
or maybe you can try this

Could be. I have a pair of unidentified ones that I never knew how to take apart. Maybe they're like that too. Thanks.

I compressed the spring and the cap comes down, but theres no way to take the cap off. I will try to see if the bottom eyebolt comes loose. please send more helpfull info.

I checked the set I have and they screw apart. I'm slipping, should have been obvious. The eyebolt is silver and the shock is black You might want to lightly heat the black part. Looks pretty soft and easily damaged.
