One can have a dream, but it takes two to make the dream come true! In 1957
Perris Raceway officially became a race track. Together Gerry and Grace Burton made
Gerry's dream come true. The original Perris was a TT scrambles track that entertained
racing clubs from all over California hosting District 37 AMA scrambles events,
as well as their regular Saturday night races. In 1960 the track was offically annexed
into the City of Perris; who held a parade downtown for the track. A big deal back
then for this small potato farming community. Over the years Perris played host
to ABC's Wide World of Sports, and saw Bruce Brown (On Any Sunday) film there as
well. The original track operated into the 1980's until Motocross came into the
picture, and the scrambles track was converted to a Motocross track.
Flash forward to 2003 when Vince Graves, along with Freddie and Donna Edwards
had the idea of bringing Dirt Track back to Perris. Taking almost two and a half
years to acquire the top soil dirt, dynamite the rocks, build fences, and all the
hundreds of hours of work that goes into track building an 1/8th mile oval was completed.
Running under the association of Southern California Flat Track Association the
new track was a success.
All the while the notion grew, what if we had a bigger track? Problem being,
the motocross track utilized the majority of the space available. Which brings us
to present day, after thousands of hours of hard work, four thousand feet of underground
plumbing and over ten thousand feet of wiring, there now is a beautiful 1/4 mile
oval where just a couple short years ago sat tons of rocks. Saturday night Aug.
21st will mark the first official race on the new 1/4 mile for S.C.F.T.A. Hopefully
the new track will produce future Grand National Champions in the Dirt Track world,
just as past champions Gary Scott and Joe Kopp have turned wheels at Perris. See
dreams do come true!
