Electric PTO on go kart

I have fox go kart big 2 seater as seen at tractor supply im not sure the model it says suburu all over it

i just yanked the motor out and put it in my bike the kart has sat 5 years it only had 10 tanks of gas run through it before i got fet up with the comet torque converter belt drive

now im thinking i was burning belts because i was pushing the limits 2 passengers up steep hills in the snow "it looks tough enough to do it lol"

well now im 24 and got a bit ahead in life iv been tinkering again I built my bike today "first post was about that and its high speed wobbles"

any how my brain storm was replace the back expander thing on the TAV? with a 12inch aluminum pully and the front comet cluch with a 1/2 vbelt electric pto clutch

the engine i have in mind is a 13 hp honda knock off "hey its already blue" i got a one wire alternator here somewhere and i can get a pto with 2 belt grooves "one to run the the alt "power my lights horn radio ect the other to drive my converted tav/ jack shaft"

i know ptos lock up harsh but they are pretty strong "i have one in mind for apps up to 20 hp

the plan is to put a heavy duty switch on the floor by the break "pto on/off"

this is just concept but i think its genius

i know i might have to have a lil roll before i engage the clutch or run risk of stalling but i only plan on running it on black top in the snow and can park on a grade alot of the time and once i get going i never completely stop im a keep my momentum type guy

i dont mean for this to be a rant my mind just works in a hectic way

whats opinions on this setup has anybody done it ?

Well if you are getting the 13hp Harbor Freight engine with electric start its has a 6amp alt inside already. So there would be no need for a second alt to run radio, ect... If you are getting the HF motor make sure to check the engine section and get a 15% off coupon. I would either get another TAV or get a Clutch made for belts or convert to chain.

6 amp stator i seen that

why stop at 6 amp when i can have 60? good point though it is a nice feature

a tav locks up as soon as you give it gas a pto you could lock up a 3600rpms if you wanted i dont know how healthy that would be but i can hear the chirp now lol

and for a straight chain drive i tried it and smoked alot of max torque clutches wheels are too big

Because when using a 60 amp alt you are going to pull HP from the motor to charge or run anything. Onboard alt is already properly setup to pull 6amps and will run almost anything you would need in a kart.

I personally would just go back to a TAV unit and change the rear sprocket to a larger one. This would take care of "keep smoking the clutches" and would be suitable for a TAV.
K Im done this look like your going to try a PTO to Jam it into gear and just go for it. A very stupid Idea. You will ruin everything including PTO, engine, frame, axle, and whatever else it takes out.

But Im done cause this may get stupider before you kill yourself.

You can lead a horse...................

An electric PTO clutch might be a bit of a harsh ride but not as harsh a ride as the people that would have us rolling around on stone wheels still.

I'm thankful to the people that keeping pushing the bounderies and giving us all so much.

I say "GO FOR IT" but you may want to find a way to soften the engagement a bit, some kind of rheostat maybe.
I have to believe that a simple gear ratio change will help more than anything though.

this is what i came up with

a rheostat is a good idea ,, i think a house dimmer switch would work huh?

id be worried though the gradual application of electric would burn the pto up faster considering they are designed not to slip at all

90% of the places i ride are grass, gravel or dirt i ride on the street when it snows but thats not so often,Im running ribbed Carlisle' tires so the "harsh" lock up isn't going to affect me too much the tires are going to slip some and the shock will be absorbed through the pads under the motor. Its not going to rip the engine out the kart and throw it 150 yards like some people think, lol

my final design concept is 11 hp cast iron havester 6 inch pto with duel pulleys . duel 10 inch pulley on a 3/4 inch jack shaft , 19 tooth sproket on the jack shaft running back to a 40 tooth on the axal my tire diameter is 14 inches on the back

I have to use the car alternator with this motor it has no build in charging capabilities

correction

my engine will have a triple pulley and my jack shaft will have the duel pto on it otherwise my alt only chargers while im rolling which is dumb

any ideas is appriciated

I've never taken one of those PTO's apart to see exactly how they work.

If it slips a bit by using a rheostat it could cause it to burn up sooner IDK I'd guess so but I'd be more concerned about having it fully engaged.

If you use the belts with a spring loaded tensioner it could allow a bit of slippage and save a bit of wear and tear on the drive train.

I say just make it and run it to see how it works and mod from there.

It would be kind of fun to be able to run the rpm's up then engage it and GOoooo......

your clutch is on off they pull a good amp load you will have problems using a dimmer switch upgrade to a better tav i did ti for a friend and he rides it all the time you may have more of a problem than the tav burnning up belts a stock alt. pulls 1 to 5 hp off your car think of what it will do to your performance. your clutch idea will work but its on and off and they dont like abuse
