4-16 Heald Hauler rebuild/restore

I've posted help questions in a couple other threads, but thought I'd start a thread covering the rebuild/restore of my 4-16 Heald Hauler.

As I picked it up a few weeks ago it was missing the engine, drive clutch, seat & misc pieces.
The brake calipers were froze & all the shiny pieces had a good layer of rust on them.
I dropped the calipers off with Power Tec who will be rebuilding them for me.
Also picked up a lot of parts to get going on this project.


Here it is in my small shop getting knocked down.


Ready for sand blasting.


The PO intended to put a 440 sled engine in it...
I'm guessing thats why the frame has been cut up here....I'll weld this up after blasting the frame.

Member "camelot35" sugested I take a look at the output shaft on the trans.
Sure enough...cracked just like said it might be.


Picked up this Briggs 18HP I/C twin today, the original engine was a Briggs 16HP twin.
This is a little more power, but has the same foot print as the old 16.


Any suggestions on how to straighten out the hood?
It's buckled in pretty good & should be flat across on the top.
The metals to springy at the crease to force it out...thinking I should heat it lightly with a torch & try to work it out that way?
I'm no body man.

Hi Rollerman, great photos I'll be following your progress. I've never seen how they did the steering before looks like its simple and workable. Out of curiosity what did the engine cost you, I've been watching for one like that 16 to 18 horse haven't seen a one here in MN at least horizontal shaft engine.
I know that they made a few three wheeled Haulers with the steering wheel I asked Ron about and he said they weren't as handy as they looked to be.

GB, I gave $75 bucks for the engine....I know I probably got took.
I don't think the four wheel version will turn as well as our trike style Haulers.
Another member here "camelot35" has the trike style with the off set steering wheel, I'll have to ask him how it handles?

Not much of an update, going to try & start sandblasting the frame tomorrow.

Also been talking with Ron Kimbal...I'm going to make another run up in a week or so, get my brake calipers & take my trans.
He has an output shaft in stock & told me he'd put it in the trans for me.
Still debateing on IH red or OD green for the color.

Holy crud Rollerman and I suppose you tried to talk him down on the price boy around here they want $250.00 to $500.00 for an engine like that. I used Ditzler MTK 72083
on mine its a nice red. Have fun up at Ron's if were not so far I'd be there in a heart beat he is just a great guy to vist with about these Heald's.
Yes it will be interesting to learn about camolot35"s off set 3 wheeled Hauler.

Interesting project! Love that chain steering. With the tractors in the back ground, it looks like you've been down this road before.

As far as the hood, does it have any support on the inside? Gussets, etc. You may try tacking in some small angle iron to true it up.

Don't use too much heat, you'll warp it. Cold, use a hammer on one side, and a blocking dolly on the other side, (anvil type of arrangement) to "roll" the metal to where you need it. Use the dolly to dictate where you want the metal to go, and the hammer to push it there. That's the best way I can describe it.

GB I didn't talk my friend down on the engine, but I did make him load it up.

Dave the hood is supported mid way, where you see it bent down by a steel tube.
The center more or less just rides on that tube.
It's bolted in along the bulk head & tied in at the very bottom near the bumper.

I'm assumeing a PO ran into a truck bumber maybe??
Thats why mine is caved in below the support.
It's not just bent down, but out too.

Worse come to worse I'll skip past working on the hood & see what it will cost me to have another made.

Little update...started to sandblast the frame, but with the 30 degree temps out side either my goggles fog up or the chamber in the sandblaster is sweating, so slow progress.
Going to be in the 40ies tomorrow & will try to have a better go at it then.
I also use an electrolysis tank for the smaller parts.




Ebay drive clutch came today too.
