gonna start on the Scrambler

I decided to go ahead and do a semi-resto of the '70 Rupp Scambler. I bought it off ebay 2 months back needing the carb rebuilt. It was missing some welch plugs, fired right up but quickly gave problems due to the the inside of the tank being quite rusty.

I cleaned it out and its been good but it is still getting some fine particles past the filter which the Diaphragm carb does not like too much. I also found that the seam in the tank seeps a touch, so I ordered up a POR 15 tank kit for it.

I went ahead and placed an order with both Rupp parts and Black widow motorsports. I know there was some griping a few weeks back about Brandt But I have to say that both places shipped the stuff wicked fast, and after seeing the parts and decals I feel both are charging too little for the parts! This was my frst order from both places and I am real happy with both.

Here it is in its current state:

heres what I got in store for it:
I already installed the bars from the '71 roadster I parted on it as they are in real nice shape

clean out/reseal the tank
sandblast the engine shroud, number plate, and tank and repaint
I have net decided if I am going to have some single stage mixed up or just spraybomb base/clear on it yet, I have some engine paint in spraybomb that looks like a near perfect match-cans just don't hold up as well though.

Install new decals on tank/engine etc.. ( I got all the ones I need from the Rupp vendors)

sandblast exhaust and hi-temp paint it

install shut off petcock on tank

install new "cherry" brake handle

resew the loose stitch in the original seat

install repop grab bar

sandblast/paint fender/plate mount

install repop "USA" plate on rear

I also picked up an NOS "live it RupP"" decal for the numberplate in front

Work a little harder on the rusty spots on the chrome and hope I find some better stuff than whats on there as I go!

The frame is not perfect paint by any means but its presentable with no dings or scrapes, so I plan to leave it as-is for now. The running gear is all in great shape everything under the shroud/flywheel/TC cover are clean and functioning as they should. This bike shows hardly any ride time or abuse, just "barn rot".

This SHOULD be a cakewalk project, and I hope to get it completed in the next 2 weeks as we are camping/minibiking then and I will also be attending some VW shows right after that, and would lie to have it in the back of the VW for them.

But I have been kinda lazy so we will see, I still have not finished the Z50 I posted up a few months back, and all that really needs is some bolts tightened, a chain installed and some fine tuning!

looks like its in good condition right now. I just started a rupp hustler that looks like it came out of the bottom of a lake. I know its the smaller bike but i am painting it all black and gonna do it like a black widow. Its really gonna be a nice rider bike. I am really not going for restored as much as i am going for ridable

That sounds like it will be a pretty cool looking Ride! I honestly don't care for the looks of the scrambler at all, It does ride pretty nice though! I thought about maybe turning it into a "hustler" just cause I dig the name (the magazine is allright too ) but I figured It woldl be best to keep it "stock" as possible, someone will like it more than me an trade me for something I like down the line...I hope

POR 15 kit arrived today, I guess I need to get crackin'!

You have a very nice bike to start out with. It's nice to see a Rupp in the project log. I'm working on a TT500 myself. Once I compile some photo's I'll start a log.
I really like the 1970 Roadster types, I like the external springs on the forks.

Well I finally got around to breaking out the sandblast cabinet. I can't belive the amount of pinholes that appeared through the tank! Although there is rust in the tank the outside was super clean, but when I got done blasting I could see like 6 pin holes-in off the wall places even What I thought was possibly the seam of the tank leaking I now believe may have been some of these pinholes. Its as if the tank had termites

I went ahead and welded the holes up (at least the ones I could actually see), Hopefully the POR kit will take care of everything else!

No pics to post, just a bike partially dissasembled and some of the parts either blasted or in primer right now. Unless I can get alot of open freetime It looks like I won't reach my deadline to take it camping this weekend, which bums me out as it would be the most fun to ride in the woods over everything else I have. Oh well, Between stages of the POR'ing that tank I guess I will try and button up the Z50 incase the scrambler does not get completed.

Well its been awhile since I messed with this one but I gotta get workin on it! Yea its the one I posted for sale, said I would start working on it after the
1st of the year, well here it is Jan 2

semi stripped,

I did scrounge a suppsed NOS front fender, I hope its true! its in transit, Gonna work on the original rear one a bit, I think it will come out pretty good with some TLC.

I scrubbed on the wheels I just recently got, The one on the right is not a correct band, but it cleans up real nice. There is some flaked chrome but over all it better than any of the others I have. The one on the left, well I'm gonna pull the 2 off the bike and pick the best and go from there. I guess I'll shop around for re-chroming since I'll have an OK set on the bike to use for now.

I also "creamed" the tank using a POR 15 kit today. I did my best to get the excess out, I decided it would be best to let it set up upside down as any "pooling" would end up around the inner lip at the top of the tank. Hopefully that will prevent any problems down the line. I coated the inlet pretty good and areas around it. Also around the petcock as well. Couple more days and I'll take it down and start the bodywork. Theres one handlebar ding and I need to smooth a few areas where I welded some pinholes up.

some stuff I am thinking about doing, but a bit unsure as I will not be "stock":
The extra wheels I got came with brake hardware front and rear, must have been off a roadster or enduro. I am considering putting the front brake on the scrambler. Since its all bolt-on and would be genuine rupp parts I guess it would not be to terrible????? I'll need another "cherry" lever, cable, and mount bolt. I sandblasted the hub/assy looks to be in great shape.

I am also considering using the Pirelli Tires that came on the Premier mini I just got, no dryrot and are like brand new with that real aggressive tread. I have one near perfect OG rupp trails I can save for the hopefully someday rechromed set I guess. I kinda hate to stray too much from "stock" though, unlike some of my other bikes though, it was never on the "must have" list so it will always be for sale

UGGGG, I went a little crazy today, I started unbolting the motor to detail it and ended up disassembling the entire bike! What started out as just a simple "clean up" is turning into a full fledged project! Now I am seriously considering going ahead and painting the frame as well I wish those parts would have came in from Evinrude so I could have been working on finishing the powerhead on my outboard and this would not have happened

at least there is more room in the garage with one bike out of the way, funny how it stores better in multiple pieces rather than as a whole.
