suggestions for first welder

i've been thinking about gettting a welder after christmas.....any suggestions on type and make for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.

Same one I suggested to kbs8ball for a "decent" welder:

It's a good name brand, and will do most welding jobs with no problem.
A lot of people want to get a smaller/cheaper welder, to find out rather soon that it doesn't perform the way they need it to.

If you only need to weld something once in a while, it may be better to use someone elses.

I agree...a quality-brand 180amp MIG is the best all-around welder for home shop use...welds almost anything, including aluminum, without spending a small fortune...
