I had one that I messed with for weeks and never could get it to idle right. Finally bit the bullet and purchase a adjustable carb. Have never had a issue since.
Thats pretty much same thing thats happening with mine, guess I'll just habe to get a new carb.

What kind of carb are you running now? Is it on a Briggs like mine?

No, mine was on a TEC 3.5. And I purchased one of the Oregon Reproduction Tec carbs.

Those fit. I use a 3/4 washer between the carb and intake for a better seal. Just use a gasket on both sides.,and notch it a little for the screws to clear. you have to set the idle and air,but they work great.

Yeah thats the old Briggs 5 horse, converted with a lawn mower intake manifold.. I've done it to dozens of them..

The carb is probably not jetted to match your motor...PLUS you have to check and make sure that intake isn't leaking air.. They don't really fit the best without a little work..

If that primer bulb carb is the basic right size, which it probably is, you might be able to just get a different jet, and beat up your idle jet, to make it run good..

The air filter is just half missing.. Any lawn mower repair guy will have a dozen of those in the junk pile.. Give em a dollar or two for the missing outer half and a decent used filter and put it on.. They work pretty great.. Then if the carb does get replaced, most any OTHER adjustable Tecumseh carb, the filter will still fit..

Thanks! I did notice that the intake pulled away from the motor and was leaking air, it made the motor run at full load no matter how much throttle I was giving-----then backfire and die out, I thought the motor had blown it was so loud. But I tightened it back down and it ran okay..

I think its about time to pull the trigger on a new carb and run an air filter on it
