How would you restore these 3/8 x 16 threads

Here is what I did for my original 66 GTO hurst handle. Cut off the old threads, milled the handle top flat. Then center drilled a hole in the handle, pressed in a roll pin,
center drilled a pc. of all thread and pressed it onto the roll pin. Lastly tig welded the 2 pcs. together. Contoured the weld. Cannot tell it was ever repaired.

I have this Hurst shift handle; the PO stripped the handle threads and then tapped to a smaller size. The threads were originally 3/8 x 16 and are now 5/16 x 24. How would you restore this to 3/8 x 16 threads.
What about an insert in the shifter ball instead of dealing with the handle?

Maybe, maybe not.

At least it is fixed and usable. It would have been difficult and expensive to save the original handle. Maybe you can find a replacement handle for it if you keep an eye out.

Is it a factory Hurst shifter or an aftermarket Hurst shifter? Lots of difference in the handle fitment between the 2.
