These engines while no longer in production were some of the best actual “Made in Japan” engines ever produced. OHV, double main bearings, cast iron sleeve, auto decompression, etc. this one has electric start too.

They are interesting because they aren’t a slant like most small engines. The cylinder orientation is straight up and down like a Briggs flathead, this allows it to fit in some spaces your typical Honda of the same HP might not fit. And Hondas were/are built in Thailand, not Japan like this Subaru.

Is it the same size as a Tecumseh hm80 or closer to a hs model? And I assume the tank in removable?
Hi Skipp, it’s closer in size to an HM80. Pictured here is an HM70 (same block and size as an HM80) for comparison. The Subaru is taller than the hm70 mainly because underneath that removable tank, there is a valve cover for the OHV assembly.

A closer comparison would be to the fairly obscure tecumseh OH series of engines which also featured a little valve cover “box” on top of the head.
