Yes- they do produce a slight performance gain and were prohibited in Karting for this very reason. In addition to providing a smooth wall inside the exhaust port (no exposed threads to cause turbulence) for better flow, in addition, by design, the exhaust port on the Briggs 5 HP is a bit too large for maximum performance. The insert reduces the I.D. and provides a little more back pressure which will help performance with a properly designed multi-staged header pipe. We installed one of these on my son's (modified) Briggs Raptor 3 and you could tell a slight difference.
