Big taper lighting

I guess the trick is to get the magnet alignment correct for the magneto when the points open. At that point you want the current flowing in the primary to be close to the peak.

Late 1970’s/early 1980’s 12v 3amp lighting systems for the small frames are pretty much non existent. I am converting a setup to fit one and using a large taper flywheel ( post 1981) Just glued the magnets on.
Are you making the flywheel like this one that came off a 83 troy bilt tiller H50. I know nothing about the charging systems that's why I'm asking.

Let there be LIGHT!!!!!!!!

My test engine to see if this works is a 1993 H35 that is still in one piece and running. I will be doing a full custom rebuild and will keep it external electronic ign BUT adding a 12v 3 amp alternator so I had to drill and tap out the lugs anyway, so it made for a good Guinea pig. I threw caution to the wind just bolted it on and set points and timing……that bit me in the ass

I got it to run and idle but it was taking a dump at anything above idle and spark was erratic. Back to the drawing board, cleaned every connection and mating surface, new condenser and points, and tried it again. Other that the already known dead spot in the China carb that hits the garbage can during engine rebuild, it ran and started just the same as it did with the electronic ignition flywheel and coil..which this engine actually runs well. Started easy revved right up, and didn’t falter.

Except this time it’s got lights!!!! Both legs pitting out the same voltage and working as should! A0814652-A717-49AC-A857-CDD10DE95C27.jpeg 1F617EC2-1230-4D8C-92CF-8D5D444AF5C8.jpeg

So I'm going to ask what's probably a couple dumb question because I have no clue. Is it intended to go on let's say a 1979 HS50 and do you have to use a post 1981 crank. If I ask too many dumb questions just tell me to shut up.
Yes big taper crank post 1981 on this flywheel. So it will fit hs40,50 and the later small frame H engines too (see above) I have another one of these magnetos coming in that I just bought the other day so I will most likely do a small taper flywheel as well. Specific to HS40 and 50.
