I have these pins, I don't know what they are intended for I thought that maybe it had something to do with The GAR/civil war as I have a lot of stuff from a regiment in Wooster ohio from one of the men enlisted there, and this came from the same place. But I was cleaning it up and noticed the patent dates are 1917/1918 so its later than that. They are both pins, one looks like something is supposed to go in the center like a picture. Anyone know?

I swear I recently saw a decal on a vehicle that looked almost identical minus the oval shaped cut out, might not even be military

They're service flag pins. A service flag or service banner in the United States is an official banner that family members of service members can display. The flag or banner is defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member serving in the US Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities in which the US Armed Forces are engaged. A gold star (with a blue edge) represents a family member that died during service, without specifying cause of death. The deceased might have been killed in action, or died due to unrelated causes.

Mothers pin, each star represents a family member serving in the armed forces. the bigger one can have the service members picture in it.
If it has a smaller gold star inside the blue star that service member has died.

edit:sorry was typing when he posted^^^

They said they tried to track down any living relatives and blah blah couldn't find anybody, so it's going up for auction..

A arm and a leg.

Couldn't help myself. Absolutely no disrespect meant at all. Just my sick sense of humor.
