Can I shorten my shocks?

I purchased a pair of replacement shocks for my 1975 Honda XL70. They are a tad too long. I’m able to force them on but am concerned about bending something. Is there any adjustment I could do to take out maybe 3/16-1/4 inch out of the length between mounting bearings. Thanks

I could be wrong but I wouldn't think a quarter inch would cause a problem with shocks. If you are comparing them to the original ones maybe they are just shorter from being compressed for years.

That’s a possibility, but there is no way the original shocks would require me to force down the swing arm bolt to get them on. It’s possible to bend the swing arm on these little bikes. I would have thought I’d be able to compress the shock to get a 1/4, but these things don’t move, and they are on the softest setting. Will moving the spring adjustment to a stiffer setting make it any shorter? Here is a pic of the shocks. There were no directions included with these Thanks IMG_2868.png

You want some preload on those shocks with no load on them. Your swing arm should extend down (axle end of course) quite a ways. Is your swing arm hitting something when you move them down? Or is the problem when you have one shock on, and you can't get the other shock on? Or is your brake anchor/stay still connected? Chain still connected? Is the swing arm hitting the frame before you have it low enough to facilitate shock installation? Is the swing arm axle frozen within the confines of the swingarm bushings? No matter what else is going on, 1/4 inch is nothing in the world of shocks.

I’m going to pull these back off when it warms up and I’ll inspect the swing arm structure to see if it’s hanging up somewhere. The only thing I did was remove the old shocks and add a few extra washers to make up for a narrower shock head on the new ones compared to OEM. I didn’t loosen anything else. It was hard putting on one shock and even harder putting on the other once one was in place. Thanks
