choke acting like throttle???

#1
Hey guys, I'm new here and I got one heck of a problem. It has everyone I know baffled. I have a 2006 (?) mini baja 165 from CT, bought used. The main problem I'm having is that the choke is acting like the throttle and the throttle is doing nothing... In other words when I move the choke to the off position the bike takes off on its own. I tried readjusting the "idle screw" that seems to do nothing. I ordered a new carb (which came without a float, and worked for awhile!! wierd...) checked the float and jet, all ok... the choke seems to control the idle and clutch.

Need help, gonna pitch this thing in the lake soon!

Look for vacuum leak between carb/intake/head

Just browsing through this section and don't have a Honda clone. However your problem sounds familiar. If there is a vacuum leak between the carb and the head, the pressure drop in the intake may not be enough to pull the required amount of fuel from the carb making a lean condition. When you close the choke you are richening the fuel mixture by limiting the amount of air coming into the intake and increasing the pressure drop on the engine side of the choke blade.

When you changed the carb you may have tightened a clamp or changed a leaking intake or carb gasket, temporarily fixing the problem until the faulty clamp, etc came loose again.

Hope that helps

By the way.

Spray some water on the intake or areas that could be leaking, but not directly into the carb. If a vacuum leak exists it will pull the water into the intake and the idle of the engine should be affected.

Yup... I 3rd that... Just tighten down all of the intake and carb bolts real good before even going anywhere on the project... It sounds to me VERY MUCH like a BIG air leak somewhere AFTER the carb.. When an engine is getting way too much air it will do what is called (race) because that is basically all the carb does is determine the amount of air the engine gets, and mixes fuel into the stream... If ya have a loose intake manifold it will be like having the throttle half open, when ya choke it to death it probably seals off the system enough to slow it down and force feed it a bunch of extra fuel that it can't really burn...

Sounds like an air leak... Tighten up all your bolts... Maybe even take them all out and make sure none of your gaskets are damaged first...

OH and sometimes people will over tighten the carb bolts and bend the two ears over and the middle of the carb doesn't mount flush with the intake anymore.. Don't try to bend them back or they will most likely break.. Just run a file or across it until it level and flush again.. You can use like die grinders and stuff too but gotta be REAL careful what you're doing..

you guys are awesome! The gasket was shredded!! I replaced it and it runs better now, took it for a short run and it's alot better. although now it has a tendancy to "jump". When I keep the throttle at a steady pressure sometimes it realy GOES! any thoughts? maybe I should try looking for other vacum leaks?
