clutch or torque converter

I see go karts with clutches. Is that ok? is there a limit to when a clutch can be used? weight? HP? etc?

The torque convertor allows you to change springs which changes the engagement RPM and top speed and also allows more fine tuning as your needs change over time.

You can change springs to fine tune the torque converter but the real advantage of running one is it gives you variable gear ratios. Acceleration as well as hill climbing ability is MUCH stronger and yet you are not locked out in low gear, it will shift into high gear and give you good top speed as well.

Torque converters allow you to drive SLOW while a clutch is pedal to the metal so it has a chance to cool down after lock up. The size of the tire dictates when you have to switch to a torque converter system. Any tire larger than 13" in diameter you should switch to a torque converter. Your higher end go karts would have a torque converter while the low end karts would have a clutch.
