Engine temperature

I'm running a 196 clone engine egine with stage 2 mods. My head temperature is running from 250 to 290 depending on how hard a pull I'm on. How hot is to hot?

I would not consider those temps as excessive, especially for that part of the head next to the exhaust side.

Point your thermometer at some other places on the engine. You'll see that the exhaust side of the head are the only impressive temps.

My temperature sensor is a ring under the spark plug. I didn't think it was excessively hot but was curious to know what normal was.

The subject doesn't come up very often and I'm not sure that anyone knows what the normal or expected temp should be at specific areas of the engine.

I use an infrared thermometer and the only thing I can conclude is that temps are similar between the two engines I use (196 and 224). And I have found that the oil doesn't get very hot but I do need to check it after a longer ride. I check these just because it's interesting not because something is wrong.
