Here We Go Again.

What a crappo year! Early May I have my left hip replaced, no biggie. Father's Day 6/19, I fall in the living room while moving a couch and get a spiral, displaced fracture in my left leg. 9/4, on my birthday (71) after rehabbing 2 1/2 months and my leg is not feeling so hot. I take a step on it and it feels squishy and my leg shortens about 2" and has a major bow in it. 9/6 and I am under the knife again. The leg has not started to heal and the internal metal fixation devices have either broken or dislodged. As I write this from the hospital, I am looking at 2-3 months of non-weight bearing and another 4 months of general rehab to come close to normal. They think an infection may have kept it from healing right but they are not sure. I have six weeks of pic line antibiotics to look forward to.

But hell, I just thought I'd try and cheer you all up. Anyway, there are lots of peeps out there worse off, so I'll just sweat my way through it. I will probably be on here a lot so I hope you guys keep it interesting.

Femurly Yours, Fred

I'm so sorry. Sitting around waiting to heal is awful. The clock stands still. Best wishes that you come through this quickly and easily, with no more complications.

Oh man Fred? I sure hate to hear that. Am I reading it right that the same leg didn't heal and is further damaged now? Your luck doesn't sound any better than mine. I hope all goes well this time. This is why they call it practicing medicine and not fixing medicine.

25 years ago, a friend was working on a track roller on a big excavator. I went by to see what was happening and it was lunch time. We all went to lunch and then picked up the bolts that were needed to replace the lost or broken bolts. one brother, Ronnie got in the seat and cranked it up. We then fixed a chain around the track and around a tooth on the bucket. He started pulling straight up on the track to create room to get you hand in to work. The other brother Mark put the roller in place and was starting the bolts. They had used a 5/16'' chain. It seemed that Ronnie was still pulling on the chain a little bit and I was just getting the words out to stop pulling and the chain broke, dropping the track on top of Marks hand. Trapping him. I have no clue what that track weighed but I grabbed it and snatched it up off his hand. He slid his hand out and just collapsed on the ground. We got him loaded up and to the emergency room, but he needed a specialist. They sent him home with his fingers going in about 3 directions with pain killers and an appointment to see the specialist the next day. About 2 weeks later we all go Deer hunting. He has pins in his fingers. We were on a small track of land, so he decided to walk down the middle carrying a Remington 870 to try and walk up a deer. As well as get the first shot... About 10 minutes in we hear boom.... followed by yeaaaawwwwwwwwww.... and he missed the deer but one of the pins struck the trigger guard solidly. He said it wasn't too bad once you got past the initial pain. He may have taken an extra pain killer too. Was a good day. We killed 3 deer that day.

Hope you feel better my friend! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Ya ain't gonna believe this one. So I am 2 days away from discharge and I notice a bulge by my left knee. I ask for an xray and guess what. All the internal hardware is once again coming loose. 10/27 I am back under the knife. Now I am NON-weightbearing for 3 months and have to do daily infusions for forty days. At least this time I can do them at home through a PICC line. Someday I hope my ship comes in and this thing heals up. Thought I'd update you guys.

That sounds awful. Hopefully you have a hobby that can occupy your down time without stress. Sitting in front of a screen all year cant be good. I worked with a guy that had his hip replaced 8 times! Maybe more by now i havnt talked to him in a while. He hit a tree on a sled when he was a teenager.

@superflea ...Hey Fred, I know it's only been a few days, but are you feeling any better since you are at home ?

How's your leg feeling ?

I'm pulling for you.
I'm not feeling that bad. I get around the upstairs with a walker. My granddaughter was born with Cerebral Palsy and that little girl has been through so many surgeries and endured so much pain. Yet through it all she can brighten the room with her smile and positive energy. So whenever I start getting "Whoa is me" I just think of her. I am worse off than some but there are so many others that are a lot worse off than me. Thank you all for the positive vibes as they and this site help me take each day one at a time. Live long and prosper, my friends.

Fred
