hf 6.5 clone throtte / choke

#1
I have a harbor freight 6.5 hp non cali motor, we installed the affordable go carts throttle linkage kit on it and had some issues

when the motor is started with gas switch all the way to the right(on) and the choke all the way to the left it starts up great and when i try to back the choke off the motor just starts racing, clutch engages and everything

not sure where to begin, i installed the throttle linkage kit exactly how it should be and matches any pictures I can find, the throttle functions great with the kit but i just cant get the idle how it was with out the kit

any help would be great

i saw a similar thread while searching with no answer. I'd be interested too. I have the kit and am putting it on with the governor until I get rod/flywheel beefed up. I'm thinking there is no need for the shorter link from the plate to the carb in that case. I was just going to put in the return spring, brackets and cable fitting.

Leaving in the governor is not necessary, and a bad idea. With stock valve springs you will float the valves way before you can break the rod! Without the gov you will go from 3600rpm to 5500, not enough to break stuff but enough to make you enjoy riding a bunch more! I've done lots of these! You have many linkage options, the way to go is also guided by where you want your throttle cable to run!

Im having the same problem and cant figure it out. Sucks cause I still havent had a chance to ride the thing. Starts easy first 1 or 2 pulls, let it warm up, then turn off the choke and it HAULS ASS away from me. Its faster with no gas given then the stock motor was wide open.??? :( Tripple checked everything for smooth function / return / rubbing etc.

Smacked and I put the same kits on our motors and had the same problems. All I did was add an extra spring to make it snap back faster then adjust the idle screw. The idle screw is all you need to mess with to keep it from running away from you. It's the black screw(smacked's had a black plastic cap that comes off easily) and turn it to the left until it stops running away from you when you're not choked. It's on the back of the carb, use a phillips head and access it from under the seat, you'll see it. Good luck

Smacked figured out that the rod that came with the AGC kit was too long. We cut them down last night so that the throttle wasn't held open. We clocked the bikes at 41 mph.

Can you really remove the governor on an otherwise stock clone without fear of blowing the thing apart? I have a Mini Baja with the original 5.5 and a Harbor Freight 6.5 I just bought for a kit we're going to build. They'd sure be a lot more fun without the governor, but I don't want to destroy them.

You will get many opinions and IMO they are all good ones, what is right for one man is'nt always right for another! I decided to remove the one on my blue DB sice my son has the yellow cloned one still governed to ride! I dont like the surging when I back the throttle adjust screw out, it goes faster but then the gov. fights back! You'll know your limit if you have good sense, which you obviously do for seeking opinions on the subject! Good luck RobK!

Okay, but how long and how well has your blue clone held up with no governor? I assume it hasn't exploded on you.

So you're saying that the AGC kit will cause the throttle to be held open, thus causing the bike to run away on you when you start it?

That's what we discovered. Unless we did something wrong, which I doubt we did as we went over it numerous times. My earlier post on this thread stating that all you have to do is adjust the screw, is incorrect. The reason why that worked for me at the time of the post is because, unknown to me at the time, I had bent the rod that came with the kit, which gave it shorter throw. I'm not saying don't order the kit, cause I would order it again if I needed another one....but if you do have the problem, it's a quick fix.

I ordered the kit, and will be installing it soon. If it doesn't work, I will cut the rod down like you said.

You can shorten the stock rod down to 1-7/8 inches long from the 90 down into the carburetor and were it fits into the stock throttle arm. Make sure to loosen the 10mm nut on the throttle arm so it returns easily but not too loose to come apart. and use a heavy return spring.
Here's a picture before I did the governor bypass. I will have to get a picture of the new shorter rod.

i had a similar issue with my clone i had removed the throttle link and we i did i put it on backwards which caused it to be wide open wen i took the choke off. all i had to do was remove the linkage and turn the linkage rod back the oppiste way to its normal position and now it runs correctly and like a champ.
