Proper maintenance procedure is to replace both sprockets along with a new chain. This ensures the longest life for all of the components.

The way you can tell if your chain and sprockets need replaced is to look at the position of the chain tensioner. When everything is new the tab is pointing straight back. When the tab is pointing down the chain is stretched beyond the recommended amount and is worn out.
