Snapped My Collar Bone

#1
Snapped my collar bone in half at work yesterday. Was riding the atv when the tire got caught in a rut and locked up the steering wheel. threw me off and it snapped on impact. i was out there all by myself so i had to flip the atv over ride it back to the phone shut a bunch of gates behind me called 911 and had to walk down the driveway so the ambulence didn't pass the place. It hurts like a bitch the worst pain I've ever felt.

So workers comp injury. Hmmmm. 66 1/3 percent of your normal pay to do nothing. We fix those with paltes and screws.

Hey Bryan do yourself a favor and get that checked out REAL good!! I shattered mine mt. biking back in 2001 docs said id be fine, gave me a shot in the a$$ for the pain sent me home! Month later im in the worst pain in my life (untill I dislocated my hip) left arm starts to go numb!!! Go to a specialist an he tells me this is bad!! Near as he could tell is when the bones grew back together they severed the nerves in my arm!! Arm starts to atrophy and go dead!! Lost all motion in my arm except slight finger movement and tricep, bicep completely dead!! Go thru surgery 8 hrs. metal plate and 6 scews later!! About a year to the day some nerves grew back and I got probably sixty pecent use back, will never be the same!! Lots of physical therapy!! I should have been put in a splint or something I believe they call a butterfly:shrug: not sure, in my case probably should of been in surgery right away!! All I got was a sling and a lollypop!! My results not typical. Lots of collar bone breaks are not too bad, mine was an exception. Moral of the story... get it checked out!!

There are difference in opinions in the treatment. the Docs I work with believe in plates and screws for immediate fixation. Allows quicker motion. There is a concervative treatment, a figure of eight strap and a sling for comfort.
The deciding factor is #1 comfort #2 amount of overlap or displacement. If tte ends are pretty well lined up then you are pretty safe with a figure of eight and a sling. If the fx ends are displaced then a plate and screws.
JDogg, that is the worst complication. Well except for severing your subclavian vein or artery. What you discribe is awful. You are fortuanate to have found someone with experience to disect the nerves free from the fracture callous.

Wow get well soon. Me left one was badly broken and several of my top ribs. Did the figure 8 "cast" and it healed incorrectly. Had it rebroken and aligned. There os an inch difference on my left and right shoulder height now...:) If I sneeze my neck/back fall out of adjustment.

Hope you get to feeling better soon. I broke one of the bones in mine about 14 years ago along with a few ribs racing BMX and i got the figure 8 sling that goes around your shoulders and behind your neck. The gave me good pain meds but they made me so sick i couldn't take them. I was rolling through the track the next week just to get my points, it was all i could do to stand up and pedal the bike but i wasn't giving up with out a fight.....young and dumb I guess.

Take it easy and try not to make ANY sudden movements....THEY SUCK!!!
