Strange repairs

I was talking to my Dad today about a vehicle we had at the mine that was knocking.

He suggested something I haven't thought about for years. My grandfather used an old leather belt to put around the rod bearings on an old ford pick up he used to haul firewood and such around. Ran it for years like that. I had forgotten all about that.

Made me start thinking. What are some strange repairs you have seen done or in operation.

I knew of a guy who put a two whole potatoes in the rear end of a truck to keep it from squeaking.

A little Citroen 2CV car ran for 33 years with the gearbox stuffed full of bananas, in leau of oil.

I have heard about strips of Bacon fat wrapped around the crankshaft before the rod was bolted on to stop knocking.

They used to use wax saturated leather for rod bearings a long long time ago.
