Tecumseh Manufacture date by style

What i haven't seen mentioned, and i hate it, is when that stupid primer bulb was introduced on the carb side of the shroud. So many times i have been cruising CL and have my eye on a motor that looks good from the other side or back only to finally see it and pass. My guess is this started this in '77.

I don't know what year it started but this 1970 snowblower engine had the primer bulb off on the heater box around the carb.

On the shrouds with the primer bulb, it's not a very big hole if you remove it. Maybe 1/8".

 You made me go look closer. It is a 1/4" threaded hole, so the inside diameter of a 1/4" nut. About 0.2". Quite a bit bigger than 1/8" but doesn't look like it would be hard to fill

Put a 1/4" machine screw in from the backside and grind it off smooth on the front side?

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. I've seen tons of engines with those damn primer bulbs in the shroud. I can't tell you how many times I've been looking on CL and thought I found something worth looking at only to see that monstrosity on the front side.

I've never attempted to remove and fill on, so I couldn't tell you what works and what doesn't, but it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to remedy.

No its not a hell of a lot of work (although id swear I saw an nos shroud with a hole the size of a quarter for the primer bulb) but my big question was when they started that BS. I see one of those and I think I'm seeing a late 70's engine. Out of my area of interest. So its possible I'm wrong as it was said above they were there in the early 70's. Ive only seen them on heater boxes or in the case of the Sears Craftsman ones, on the tank bracket when buying an early 70's Tecumseh.

Old School Thumb Primer was one 1/4" hole,

The New Style has three holes.

Two for mounting pins/plugs and then the primer nipple. Its a lot more to fix and they are usually in the face of the shroud.

Yeah thats the one im thinking of. More like the size of a nickle not a quarter. But yeah, more of a pain in the butt to smooth over than I care to get into. Especially when there are still the good ones out there. Maybe in 5 yrs I'll be clamoring for those.

some other things to note, the HS50 was introduced in the 71/72 range, and was always the mid 70's "square" topped shroud. since that shroud had no place for the rivet on id tag, they installed a small tag that bolted to a sidecover bolt, basically like the tag that came with a tec longblock replacement engine. They are really hard to find, does not seem like the mini bike companies were utilizing them, and I dont they were used too much on equipment either for the first year or so, probably till they were more "proven". Seemed to be game on by about '75 though for snowblowers etc.. 10lbs lighter than an H50 and a whole lot smaller!
I bought an Hs50 a while back, and it has that small tag that bolts to the sidecover. From the numbers it appears to be a 1973.
Just passing along the info, I can put up pics in a little bit.
