Throttle plate opens itself while running

#1
I know ive seen this in one of my books' trouble shooting sections but cant seem to find it. What does it mean when the throttle plate opens on its own when running? I think a worn out throttle shaft? Engine just slowly flooring itself
I suppose i could stop it from doing this by putting a wire linkage from the control assembly to the gov shaft too. That would keep the gov shaft to the left and awat from the carb unless i give it throttle wouldnt it? Anyone know what the prob is though? No gas is being given.

Oh wait a minute... This is the old one that I took the short gov lever off and put a new longer one on and turned it 90 degrees to the left. Concensus was that 90 degrees would be far enough that the gov lever would not be touching the pin of the gov anymore. And that it may even fall off. No I think what is going on is the gov is still connected and is trying to gov but is now pushing the throttle plate open. Think ill try the wire link idea instead of the spring. That should immobilize it.

Looks like you ansewered your own question. That was going to be my ansewer. I just had a similar problem on a engine that wasn't running properly. The governor spring was too tight and wouldn't let it run properly.

HAHAHA... Wish that dawned on me before I posted... And this didn't happen on the bench when I was testing it as I was always holding the linkage between my fingers. Creepy thing watching that throttle plate accelerate on its own. Good thing I had just installed the kill switch. I was seconds away from a hairy situation!

Lucky indeed. I know for myself during the excitement of the project coming alive we sometimes put off the things we need like brakes and kill switches and regret it later when licking our wounds. Good job on the throttle plate fix since that would be creepy having it accelerate by itself and the thinking ahead with the kill switch in working order just in case!

Thanks. I'll never start a bike without one again. I just ordered 6 more.
