Recently I have been drilling into thick metal (1/4" steel, 3/8" steel, 1"aluminum) using regular bits that I had found in a toolbox in my basement, and I recently bought a 5/16 carbide metal drilling bit. HOLY COW!!! This thing will go through 3/8" STEEL in 30 seconds! I didn't even realize how much the bit matters! The other 5/16 bit I was using took 3-4 minutes to go completely through the metal with a 1/8 pilot hole!

Drill press is great but you still need good bits and a hand drill to do some tasks like when I was drilling holes in a car bumper reinforcement to install a hitch

1" hole in that hardened steel would of taken forever with cheap bits
