what motors fit the ProMod 6.5 upgrade kit?

I saw a Kohler 6.5hp engine for 185.00brand new--shipped to my house. Cast iron cyl. liners. Wouldn't this be a way better engine for only $55 more than the Harbor freight engine? So what other engines fit the ProMod kit without any mods/drilling?

Sounds like it but the newer Kohlers are actually clones of clones from what i've seen. The block and basic layout is not something original that Kohler has come up with like their old iron indestructible tanks. The main difference i noticed is the air cleaner setup is like some big cylinder thing.
The HF motors all have cast iron sleeves, dual bearing cranks, low oil shutdowns as well.

Any standard bolt pattern engine will fit the plates, the air cleaner clearance is gonna be the biggest concern with the Kohler and the Recoil and airbox seem to be one piece. Probably a Small Engine Warehouse unit and while they are great engines and likely have a warranty the return shipping is on you where as the HF 6.5 is a proven winner with a 2yr no hassle warranty for $20 more and has tons of aftermarket support and performance parts as well. You'll be hard pressed to find a header for instance or anything else DB specific for the Kohler. Again it's a great engine but clearance would be my primary concern. I've had several different engines in mine from flathead briggs to an Itec and now back to a clone. You can run anything you want if you can work around the little things that come up but the clones will be the easiest to install and modify.

Ok., now I get it. Its not just the mounting plate , its the whole layout of the engine. Many products built just for this motor layout. I'll stick with the clone and work off of it.

yes, they basically use 3 mounting patterns. there's the small one like the stock DB engine, the ones that are 3-4hp to 6.5hp engines use and then bigger ones for engines that seem to be 8hp and up. the numbers i used are more for an example than anything. they're kind of correct though.

i did find that they're not exactly the same. my 6.5 clone and 5hp briggs fit the plate no problem while the 6hp tec needed a little bit of muscle to get on. the mounting pattern was just a :censure: hair bigger.

It's the same way with the mounting for the jackshafts and TAVs the manufactures use a common bolt pattern there too- -so the JSs and TAVs will bolt to most small motors.
