Could be many things. For instance a weak coil. When they get old they can become heat-sensitive. It could be other things such as vapor lock also. Next time it shuts down on you, check for spark and fuel.
When it dies, does it seem like it's spark or starving for fuel? Try running it with the gas cap loose. If it's not ventilating, that could cause it to shut down.
