standerd 196 baja, with governer bypass

Could be many things. For instance a weak coil. When they get old they can become heat-sensitive. It could be other things such as vapor lock also. Next time it shuts down on you, check for spark and fuel.

Any internal mods to the engine? Header, carb?

it starts back up and it runs back to the garage. its stock

When it dies, does it seem like it's spark or starving for fuel? Try running it with the gas cap loose. If it's not ventilating, that could cause it to shut down.

How do you know that it "gets very hot"? What are you comparing it to?
