replacing old style recoil starter

A buddy of minie just give me a 5 horse with the old style clutch and recoil starter. the engine is in great shape except for the recoil starter and housing
they are beyond repair. Can I replace with the newer style starter with the cup.:shrug:

What type of engine are you talking about. Tec, Briggs, Clone, Honda
It's in the Briggs section, so I'm guessing Briggs.

YES you can change to the new style!! You'll need to lop the smaller diameter piece off the end of the crank. New style will then fit. I think that is all you have to do. I've never done this, but it has been done. Maybe someone will have more details.

Your correct Rebeyell. All you need to do is cut off the small diameter shaft that extends past the threads. Just dont cut the threads....trust me you do and its a biatch to get the nut started again!

You'll need the starter cup & nut, plus the new style rewind.
You might need to drill new holes for the rewind if you use the old style fan shroud.
New Style fan shroud might need a hole drilled at the top for a single tab cylinder head.
