Why is there a resistor in my spark plug boot, and should I remove it?

#2
It depends on what ignition system you have. Sometimes, the resistor is needed with an electronic ignition (anyone remember the old Yamaha TCI's?) to keep the ignition module from getting fried.

Otherwise, I've never run a resistor setup on any of my flatheads or other motors. I'm talking motorcycle engines when I mean there's problems.

I like to think of it as electrical backpressure.

I can't tell you why it's there other then to limit power as these are lawn mower engines. I remove them and use a nonresistor style automotive plug boot.

I cut the coil wire as close to the boot as possible and crimped a new end on then slide the new 90° boot over it.
you do know that the old boot spins off right? no need to cut. it has a little screw on the inside that screws into the wire.
also... why are you just letting dirty air suck into the crank case??
