anyone know anything about charging batteries?

A single pole, double throw switch mounted on the handlebar would also solve the problem.

Connect switch Common to lights
Connect battery to one of the switched contacts
Connect permanent magnet DC generator (or AC dynamo) to the other switch contact

When speed is low and lights are dim or dark, switch the battery in.

Leave switch connected to Generator while not riding, prevents battery discharge.

You should fuse the + battery wire near the battery.

If your not opposed to mounting a battery, just run it total loss, and charge it at home with a small 110 volt charger. What you want to do with the dynamo, is not really worth all it will take to have it work mediocre, or not at all.

Great idea about the switch, certainly cheaper and easier.

install a 12V motorcycle battery.

keep your dynamo, if AC install a bridge rectifier to change it to DC.
