Got lucky and found a new Comet 30 TAV kit for a fair price and it fit the Honda 5hp motor with just a slight modification. It was missing the cover so back to the scrap pile for some thin aluminum diamond plate. The sprockets had been lined up prior to welding the motor plate in place so next...
After checking one last time everything was disassembled and prepped for paint. I had some 2-part epoxy primer for base and the boys picked 'hammered silver' for the finish as well as red for the wheels. A good combination. No comment on the upholstery, not my forte. We made a quick rotisserie...
I came close to building a new suspended front axle but time didn't allow so the old axle was modified and dropped 3" below the frame just to make the kart set level. At the same time the front of the frame was beefed up with steel bars driven into the ends of the original frame about 5". With...
Wheel spacing was done using some 6" well casing from the scrap pile and pieces of 3/16" plate. I needed 2-1/2" added
to each side. There is about 1/2" clearance between the frame and tires now. This kart wasn't made for 19" tall tires so next is making spacers at the front axle to keep things...
The rear wheels came with the project. The rear axle came from a Kawasaki three wheeler. Other than being too narrow
it was a good choice since it already has a differential, brake and sprocket in place. The 540 pitch sprocket is quite large so the motor plate had to be raised to get the...
Ten days with 9 & 10 year old grandsons was a blast even if I'm worn slick now.
This kkartt had a rough life ending up in in a scrap pile. Being a sucker for trying to breathe life into old
iron and to show the boys what ingenuity can accomplish we did just that.
The frame and wheels was...
You nailed it. It was probably the Explorer model. The grandsons helped me strip it down and build it into a fun kart. The rear is now a
Kawasaki KLT 200 live axle which is great. Rear tires are 19" tall so had to raise the front axle to keep it all level. Motor is from a Honda 5.5 hp
sprayer...
Hopefully someone can identify this cart 'frame'. I'm thinking it may have been made for a kart rental track since it is so heavy. Overall it's almost six feet long.
Also under some of the paint I see several 'safety' stickers. Several holes has me thinking it may have had a body on it at some...
The powder coater snuck in and got the frames done, at a premium price but one less thing to worry over. I wanted to get swing arm coated
but couldn't get the rubber bushing out and didn't want them burned up when the powder coating is baked. It will get epoxy painted along
with all the other...
What started as a 5 hour job turned into a 10+ hour job. The curse of trying to be a perfectionist.
Most of my motorcycle restorations take a year or more but a minibike??
I did get some time in on the Lil Indian today. The seat base was badly damaged as well as the foot peg supports.
The steering neck has been resized to hold the bearing race and the steering stop has been beefed up. By tomorrow
it should be finished. I want to send it along with the dragbike...
Well I've committed to entering Double Trouble in a bike show in late April. So now instead of taking
the time to build it as a runner I will just do the polish and paint thing so it looks like it's ready to fire up.
Later I will build the rear engine and have a real runner.
Still gathering parts for the MM5A. Picked up a Eastwood powder coating unit so will be experimenting with it soon.
At the same time, I'm starting to restore my old Triumph drag bike that's been neglected way too many years.
Scored a Indian MM5A locally last week that's in pretty good shape. Since the seller had little girls only, it wasn't thrashed.
Actually still has the Pirelli tires Made in Italy. Most I have seen have a Cheng Shin tire at least on the rear.
The wheel hubs are different than the first bike...
Well, still no brake plate. I've seen several on ebay and have tried contacting some but no replies so far. With all the seasons activities
I'm guessing everyone is busy. If I don't get some replies soon I'll try again. I do see that Gremeca sells 80mm brake shoes in the same
style of the...
Kmanator, Thanks , I've been following that one but just not ready to shell out that much for one.
jamac638, Looking forward to any info you have to offer. There seems to be many differences from what
I see in photos on google.
Just measured and both brake drums are 80mm. The front brake plate appears to be for a moped scooter as it has a place for a speedo drive gear. If I shortened the brake stay on the swing arm, it would actually work.. Just saying, maybe some of the bikes that have the brake arm pointing up could...
Thanks guys for you input here. Some manuals show the brake arm hanging down but I've seen a few photos
with the arm pointing up. Is it possible those pointing up are the same as the front brake plate? I'll check that
when I get back home as I do have a front brake. This is from a MM5A parts list.
