One bearing fell apart in a wheel I'm disassembling leaving the outer race stuck in the wheel. I made a puller that goes behind it and expands under it. Then it was just a matter of pushing it out from the other side. I've used this method before and it always works great.
When I was in the auto parts business I've had customers tell me that if you weld a bead across the width inside the stuck race that it shrinks enough to pry out easily. Never tried that myself. You can tell by the crude turning marks on my puller that I didn't spend a lot of time on it, but I can use it again if needed. Luckily I had a scrap of the right size DOM and a tapered lug nut on hand.
Ever weld something to something else at a particular angle, and the angle changes as the weld cools? That’s the weld bead contracting as it changes temp from hot to cold.
