Hello. My first post. I just acquired a Broncco (Tomahawk?) with an Aspera/Tecumseh 3.5 hp motor. I need to know the valve timing. There is no mark on the crankshaft gear. Thanks for any help.

Sometimes it’s a beveled tooth...look close....

No marks or bevel. This is how I set it up. It ran like crap and the oil poured out of the breather tube. It was also Very hard to pull the cord.

Once you did what you did...did you also set the time at the BTDC of .065? It’s a process

if i'm correct? most cam gears(crank) on a a Tecumseh small block are press fit with a dot mark on one of the teeth. your engine looks to have a keyway on it. so i'm assuming that would be your timing mark? don't know much about a Aspera/Tecumseh 3.5 hp motor.

I used the keyway as a mark. This motor may just be worn out.

The mark your looking for looks like it’s the top tooth in the picture closest to the left side border of the picture.

Sorry, I'm not sure which tooth you mean. The only marking on the teeth are from bumps and hammer taps.

oh ok. well it looks like the mark your looking for. if its not then i dont know. maybe the gear was put in backwards? hope you find your solution. have a great day.

i know when you do find the mark and they both line up the piston should be all the way up and both valves should be closed.

if I could get a better picture of your crankshaft and gear assy? your keyway looks to be inline with my hs-50 gear with the dot mark on it.

No luck. If I use the key as a mark it puts the motor in time- TDC with the valves closed. But it barely ran and the oil ran out. This motor is beat. I just was hoping it wasn't shot. If someone wants it, I don't. Let me know.

rings were in correct too? dont give up.
