so it finally happened, I have an engine on my bench which has too much endplay in the crank. I know there are thrust shims for this purpose, but cant seem to find a part number. the motor is a 3.5 horse 094201-0117-E1. does anyone here know the briggs part number for these shims? The diagrams don't show the shims. there are tons available on ebay and amazon and all that but I need the part number to know which ones to get. thanks in advance.

B&S uses the gasket usually to set the endplay, Thats why kits come with 3 different side cover gaskets. .005, .009, .015 Still out of spec beyond that?

The thinner gaskets are used in combination with shims if necessary to set end play. Using a gaskets less than .015 alone is not correct as far as I know. It would probably reduce cam end play too much I'm guessing.

Thanks for that. I will research. Those are thicker than I expected, seems odd to shim out that far and then have to add gaskets to make it up. Hummmmm. Thanks again.

So why couldn't one just use an arbor shim to take up some of the endplay. It seems dumb to me to shim out .0625 with the briggs shim, and then shim out the side cover .061 to get rid of .015 of endplay. A simple .015 arbor shim would do the same thing. Is there something I'm missing?

I am trying to locate the part number for Briggs & Stratton crankshaft shims/thrush washers to set my crankshaft end play for a 17.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine 31C707–0154 – E1. It is the 310000 series engine. I have looked and looked online and called several places and have been unsuccessful in finding the part number I need. I just ordered the Briggs & Stratton repair manual 276781 from Amazon but it’s going to take a little while to get here and I got the engine partially assembled and I really would like to get it put back together.
With a .015 gasket, I am out .034 1/2. Even with the smallest .005 gasket, I would still be out.001. so I definitely need the shims.
I sure would appreciate it if someone had this information. In the manual on from what I can see online on page 139 section 10 of the Briggs & Stratton repair manual 276781. It says to see the illustrated parts diagram.
Thank you very much.
