The Dominator doesn't have a scrub brake. It has a drum brake that goes inside the sprocket.

The drum brake on this mini bike works very similar to a drum brake in a car. When the lever on the outside of the brake turns it rotates a brake cam that expands the brake shoes and pads to make contact with & stop the sprocket. There is an internal spring connected between the two shoes the compresses when the shoes expand and decompresses when the lever is released.

Check this video out it shows the details of a motorcycle drum brake.

Thank you. Very helpful. Looks like Cat evolved from scrub, to drum, to disc. Any thoughts on what their mindset was. Certainly the scrub was the simplest to produce and I’d imagine the drum was the most expensive to produce. Seems as though disc may have been middle of the road, but was it the most efficient choice?

I'm not sure if Cat necessarily intended to change the brakes over time. They tended to use certain brake setups for certain models. For the smaller bikes (250X's and some 300's) they had a scrub brake. The vast majority of their bigger models (350's to 400's) used a drum brake. Some models did use a disc brake but it wasn't many.

I don't think Cat produced these drum brakes as well. I believe they bought them already built from a supplier.

Some models had the scrub and the sprocket disc brake set up. The disc brake set up rarely worked well and didn't work at all when it was saturated with chain lube. About like the scrub brake worked on a wet tire. Drum brake was the best by far when it was operating properly.
