compression

without a gauge? spin the flywheel as hard as you can with the shroud off, if it bounces back a quarter of a turn its all right, with a gauge. screw it in and pull hard on the compression stroke three times, then take reading

the gauge is free to loan at auto zone, pull the plug get the plug wire out of
the way, get someone to turn it over whyl you hold a finger as close to the
plug hole as you can, like the old days.:smile:

why test compression? too hard to get an accurate reading. use a leak down test, it tells you more than a mechanical gauge ever could.

the most accurate way to test compression is a computerized pressure transducer hooked to an ocilliscope. pricy, but well worth it! you'll need to test with an electric starter for cranking rpm consistancy.

I read that if it has the easy spin cam you should spin it backwards to test the compression. That way it comes up on the compression stroke w/o the partial valve lift.

that easy spin feature does nothing but rob power, once I cut that raised part off the cam the engine ran a lot better and idles down lower and smoother. It's best to use a lathe to do it
