For the short time I tried a live axle on my trike it was very hard to turn. I mean it literally took a lot of strength. And when you would go straight the front wheel would really wobble. I dont know why but the wobble was gone when I put the differential back in... The other thing I tried was a freewheeling hub on one side. It gave me only one wheel drive and one wheel braking but it made turning easier. This was on the live axle with the threaded ends. Like I said,I just pin the hubs on the differential. No keyway needed.
