By far the easiest way is to pull the spark plug and stick a magnet in there. A pen sized telescoping magnet from any auto parts store or Harbor Freight works the best. You just need to make sure it's against the cylinder wall and not a valve, it's pretty easy to tell where it is though. Rotate the engine so the piston is towards the bottom of its stroke and stick the magnet in there, on an L-head you need to go in at an angle because the spark plug is right above the valves. Also, it helps to use a flashlight so you can see what you're doing and, well, in case you're unsure, magnets stick to steel, they don't stick to aluminum.
