How to Tame the Beast for Kids

#1
Howdy All,

I am new to the forum and would like to tap into all the vast knowledge out there. I just bought an Azuza Mini bike with a Tecumseh OHH60 and a Comet Torq-A-Verter with 8" rims for my kids as a Christmas Gift.

The problem is that this bike is a beast. I weigh 180 lbs and I have trouble keeping the front tire down. Now I need to figure out how to tame it. If I ride it at 1/4 throttle its fine and plenty fast for a beginner. My plans are to add training wheels for now and add a side car for summer. My thought process was to find a bike that had enough power for the side car and additional rider but I am sure this one will be able to pull wheelies with the side car attached! I have purchased a remote control kill switch for additional safety.

What to do?

    • Should I mess with the governor to reduce max RPM?
    • Should install a throttle restriction device?
    • Should I address the gearing ratio?
    • Should I simply replace the engine with a smaller one?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

Hec

id say restricting the throttle would be the best solution. and with the torque converter and light kids you shouldnt have much of a problem with wearing out the belt.

you can just put a cable stop on the cable where it attatches to the engine or something similar. that KTM couldnt do anything like that because the cable goes directly into the carb

There is a inherent problem with torque converters and govenors. The governor restricts max rpm but is not that linear and smaller throttle openings. That is to say the throttle is not attached to the carb but instead the governor arm. (This is true for the HS series not sure this applies to your OHV motor) When you open the throttle it pulls on the throttle arm thru a spring which tends to yank open the carb till the governor pulls back on the arm. In that instant the revs can flash and with the low gearing of the TC can cause a instant wheelie. For kids it's best with a centrifugal clutch as it limits low end torque allowing a slow start. What I had to do on my atlas bike with TC that has thrown many a heavyweight on their ass is to put a carb restrictor which was a plate between carb and manifold with a hole drilled in it around .220 in diameter. You may have to make it a bit bigger if it stalls. Sometime depending on carb if the hole is too small not enough air goes thru the carb when it is open to draw fuel.

Thanks Jeep2003! I ordered some more cable stops. I'll install one about 1/4" from the conduit and give it a try. I was overthinking this.

Thanks again
