Use American Sign Language to respond to the person yelling at you. They stop dead in their tracks when they think you're deaf. If you don't know how to sign, which I surely don't, just make it up as you go along. Just keep a confused look on your face. The facial expression is the only part of the act that takes any practice.
The only Sign Language i know is :thefinger: and that will just piss them off even more. I always try to ignore them, but theirs times i wish i had the Trunk Monkey ! trunk monkey 1 - the video
