Speed, how much is enough?

#1
I understand that speed is subjective, and whats good for some would boggle the mind of others.

That being said I finally broke down and bought a bicycle computer thing an mounted it on my Lil Indian.

Everyone that has ever watched/rode the thing swore up and down it had to be going close to 40.

Its 4 to 1 geared on 10.5 overall diameter tire (bald , like me:laugh:), governed clone.

I measured 4 times to make sure I had it right to be as accurate as possible. (used a level with me on it)

The final tally...just a tad over 29 mph. Geared like it is I get good acceleration, can climb any hill I choose and on flat ground its almost scary.

I guess Im just a big girl but 30 with my knees above the bars is plenty fast for me.

Anybody check their speed this way? Anyone else feel their bike is "fast enough?"

Thanks for any/ all replies

I have had several engines on my DB, but only 2 without governers. A 5hp briggs and a 5.5ohv briggs kart racing engine, they both were scarry fast for a minibike the 5.5 went 45mph paced by my buddies ninja, and was leaning out starving for fuel! I put the 6.5 back on, it's governed with the stop screw turned out and it will do 35mph fast enough for this old man! My yellow one is also stock and governed, but the screw is at a point it will do an honest 30mph and that is also fast enough! Dont get me wrong, I like to go fast and dont scare easily if at all. But dont heal as quickly as I once did and I will have a faster one, I plan or removing the governer on thew blue DB but will be the only one riding it! The kart engine will be installed from time to time as well, once I install some animal parts and a better carb! Fast enough yes, but faster is more fun and as long as you respect it chances are you wont get hurt! But nothing is certain but death in this world!

I got plenty balls, I once got a ticket(ran out of gas) @ 153 mph on I95 in Maine. The cop tore up my licence by the side of the road. "Sir, your privilege to drive in the state of maine is REVOKED as of this minute!"

On a bike this small 30 is fine for now. Ive got a couple bigger Minibikes I might build for more speed.

Good rule of thumb is "Go fast enough that you almost crap your pants...and then a little bit more" :thumbsup:I dont know the exact scientific formula for this equation though:doah:

There is a big difference riding on a minibike. I see a lot of people get scared at only 40mph.

Here is a video of me testing my bike out at the local racing spot.

MDB how fast do you estimate you were going in the video? And what is the fastest you have been? For me the 45mph along side the ninja was perhaps the fastest I've gone and that was very fast IMO! I would go faster but not without leathers and a helmet! I have gone 150+ on a sportbike and was going 125 when I broke my neck on my FZR600! That was fast enough as well!

Dang MDB, I got a heak of a adrenaline rush watching that video. I wish they had a place around here where I could do that with mine. Keep up the great videos.:thumbsup:

. o O (Hmmmm ..... does anyone else hear Sammy Hagar in the background here? "I Can't Drive 55"? Maybe it's just me .....)

How fast is fast enough? I personally like boondock's description: "Go fast enough that you almost crap your pants...and then a little bit more" Fast enough is when it scares the hell out of you, plus another ten miles an hour.

Well I was down on RPM because my clutch was slipping pretty bad. I think it turned only 8600 RPM. Normally I can turn 9100-9200. That's worth another 3mph.

My plan was to catch the guy before the finish line. but with my clutch slipping it allowed him to jump out to far, and me not get all my speed until after the finish line.

I think I only did about 81mph at he finish line from my calculations. But I normally do 84-85mph. The guy that beat me was only going 78mph, but his E.T. is faster.

speedo thingy

@ jeep2003 The speedometer I am using is a Schwinn bike computer $10.00 @ wally world in vestal.

I had to jb weld the magnet to the sprocket to get it close enough to the sensor.

It shoudnt be too far from your house.

We should get together some time.

the bike Im referring to has original severly dry rotted tires and original wheel bearings so its not real speed friendly right now.

I love speed, just Im ok with 30 on this setup.

ROTFLMAO ...hell I'm kool with 25 or 30 miles per hour...on the smaller tire mini bikes trust me you can bust your ass going 20 ..:scooter: A mini with bigger tires are more stable but I think any thing over 45 or 50 unless you are racing with full gear is a recipe for disaster :eek:ut: some mini bikes are built for more speed than others .

yea i do my best to stay away from welfmart though  the reason i ask is because i was thinking if its calibrated for a specific size bike tire and you just put it wherever you can on your mini. the speed is probrobly not going to be very accurate

Damn man that's fast! I do like the thrill of going fast, but have'nt been that fast on a minibike yet! I'll be taking the governer off my blue DB soon, but I'm not going with the billet stuff yet! I will be riding around the neighborhood, and don't have the room to reach those speeds or RPMs! I'm tired of the governer shutting it down, I'm sharp enough to ride it responsibly and will eventually want more! Then the billet stuff will be on order!

speedo thingy @ jeep

the speedo is infinitely adjustable for tire size.

wheel diameter example 10.5 inches, convert to mm, times pie(3.1416) gives you the circumference in mm. Plug that number into the thingy, mount the magnet and sensor and presto. you got speedo. + - .5 mph
