The answer to life, the universe, and how do I stop my brakes from squealing?

I have the answer that no one anywhere has been able to provide.
This is for brakes that squeal when not being applied.

Chances are very good that you have adjusted your chain using the rear wheel, or had you wheel off for some reason.

How to fix your squeaky brakes:
First back off the adjusters on the wheel. Second, Loosen the nut that holds the brace to the brake plate.
Third loosen axle nut.

Next, make sure your tire is aligned properly using the adjusters, and also make sure your chain tension is right.
Tighten the adjusters.

Make sure your brace is loose but still connected.
Tighten the axle nut. Make sure it's tight enough to keep the brake plate from moving.

Slowly tighten brace nut until it just touches the brake plate, no more.

Replace cotter pin.

No more squeaky brakes!

The reason is this, when the brace nut is tightened too tight, it causes the the brakes to ride the drum.
