Rope and a car will get you 100mph pretty cheap. If you can't afford a rope or a car just hold to your neighbors bumper when they're leaving, but that might not get you to 100mph reliably.

Very true. Most competition classing is designed to maximize efficiency, and that special art of bumping right up against the rule books costs money.

Those DOT rated racing tires for example, that you'd never run on the road. Yokohama AO48's come to mind.
