Cleaning a coil?

I'm calling on the guys who restore briggs motors to give me a hand with this one. Can you clean rust off of a coil? is there a solvent you can use? or will it just wreck it? will evaporust work? :shrug:

I'm rebuilding some of my 5hp Briggs motors and the coil are the ones that don't use point/condenser and they are covered in surface rust, I am just wondering if I can remove it? :shrug:

yep wire brush sand paper files just be careful of the wires :doah:you can knock them off pretty easy :anon.sml:

I bought a flywheel and coil off another member and he sand blasted them, they looked great and I have had no issues with them

I take them to a wire wheel. I'm careful of the wires and plastic. They work great.
