crunch tubes needed on azusa spinners?

a crunch tube is a spacer between the bearings in a two piece
wheel assembly. it protects the weak castings against the static
pressure caused by the torque the axle bolts.

Phil, if you are using the nylon lock nuts on the axle, they are not necessary. The original set ups had those, as there were no lock nuts used and the tightening of the bolt with a lock washer was to hold the whole assembly together, which gave the opportunity to over tighten the bearings if there was no bushing there. I use these lock nuts

I have made my own bearing spacers from aluminum tube that you can find at Lowes/Home Depot that has a 5/8" diameter

how do the lock nuts on the axle prevent the crunch?

spun up a set of 2.010" wide tubes made of aluminum. didn't have any 5/8"
steel tube, i used 1" aluminum. if they help good, if not it was fun playing on
the lathe.
